Leon County Schools proudly announces Shane Kiser, Intervention Coach and Technology Support Lead at Springwood Elementary School, as the 2025 Glenn Howell Distinguished Educator of the Year.

The Glenn Howell Award honors educators whose leadership, dedication, and impact exemplify the legacy of Dr. Devurn Glenn and Mrs. Aquilina Howell—two pioneering Leon County educators who devoted their careers to advancing educational excellence and equity. This year’s recipient, Shanon Kiser, embodies that spirit through his innovation, compassion, and unwavering commitment to student success.

“Shane has exemplified the very qualities this recognition seeks to honor—faithful service, unwavering commitment, and a transformative impact on students, colleagues, and the greater Tallahassee community,” wrote Principal Sylvia Lynn. “His leadership, compassion, and innovation have made him a cornerstone of the Springwood family.”

As Intervention Coach, Kiser designs and implements targeted academic supports for all K–5 students, ensuring no child is overlooked. He also leads initiatives connecting students with academic mentors through the Student Data Chats program, partnering with advisors from Florida State University and Florida A&M University to help students understand their learning data and set personal goals. His data-driven leadership has played a major role in Springwood’s continued academic growth.

Beyond the classroom, Kiser has helped strengthen the school community through creativity and collaboration. He produced a school-wide music video celebrating Springwood’s spirit and launched OwlVision, the school’s first student media team, giving fifth-grade students hands-on experience in multimedia storytelling.

“Here’s the paradox of Shane: he is quiet, steady, unassuming—but his impact is seismic,” said Principal Sylvia Lynn. “He’s the type of educator who changes the entire trajectory of a school without demanding the spotlight. He makes everyone look better, and he does it with humility and a servant’s heart.”

Kiser’s work has not only transformed academic outcomes but has also inspired confidence and joy in his students. “For one student, the progress has been striking,” noted the nomination application. “While she has grown in phonics, phonemic awareness, and sight word recognition, her greatest growth has been her confidence. Once reluctant, she now eagerly raises her hand in class—even when the material feels difficult.”

In recognition of his service, leadership, and dedication to both excellence and equity, Leon County Schools celebrates Shane Kiser as the 2025 recipient of the Glenn Howell Distinguished Educator of the Year Award.
